Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Bacon
In a large skillet, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until it becomes crispy. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking. Once done, remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set it aside, leaving the rendered bacon fat in the skillet.
Step 2: Sauté the Onion and Garlic
Add the sliced onion to the skillet with the bacon fat and sauté until it becomes soft and golden brown, about 5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
Step 3: Cook the Cabbage
Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet and toss it with the onion and garlic. Season with salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika. Reduce the heat to medium-low and let the cabbage cook down, stirring occasionally, for about 10–12 minutes, or until it’s tender and slightly caramelized.
Step 4: Add the Bacon and Butter
Once the cabbage is cooked, stir in the crispy bacon and a tablespoon of butter for added richness. If you like a hint of spice, sprinkle in the red pepper flakes. Cook for another 2–3 minutes to combine all the flavors.
Step 5: Serve and Enjoy
Transfer the fried cabbage to a serving dish and enjoy it warm. It pairs wonderfully with roasted chicken, pork chops, or simply as a stand-alone meal.
Tips for Perfect Fried Cabbage
- Don’t rush the caramelization: Allow the onions and cabbage to cook slowly to bring out their natural sweetness.
- Use fresh ingredients: Fresh cabbage and high-quality bacon make all the difference in flavor.
- Experiment with spices: While smoked paprika and red pepper flakes are great, you can also try a dash of apple cider vinegar for tanginess or a pinch of sugar for extra sweetness.
